Otex vs Olive Oil for Earwax Removal
If you're dealing with blocked ears, it's easy to reach for a product like Otex, which is widely available in pharmacies and online. Otex contains urea hydrogen peroxide, a bubbling agent designed to soften and break down earwax.
Does it work?
Yes — Otex can be effective at softening earwax. However, based on our experience at Somerset Hearing, it’s not always the most comfortable or reliable solution for everyone.
Some clients report increased discomfort after using Otex. The bubbling action may cause the wax to shift deeper into the canal rather than fully dissolving, sometimes making the blockage feel worse before it gets better.
Possible side effects of Otex (though uncommon):
Bubbling or fizzing sensation in the ear
Temporary pain or discomfort
Dizziness
Tinnitus (ringing in the ear)
Rarely, an unpleasant taste
It's always best to read the instructions carefully and speak to your pharmacist or GP if unsure.

Why We Prefer Olive Oil
At Somerset Hearing in Taunton, we recommend using olive oil (such as Earol spray) to soften earwax before removal — particularly before procedures like microsuction, irrigation, or manual removal.
Olive oil is gentle, natural, and tends to soften the wax gradually without causing the bubbling sensation some people find uncomfortable with Otex. When used twice daily for 5–7 days in the affected ear(s), it can significantly improve the ease and comfort of wax removal.
Important: If you have a perforated eardrum or a history of ear surgery, you should avoid using any ear drops without medical advice.
