EAR WAX REMOVAL

What is Ear Wax Removal?
At Somerset Hearing, we offer a combination of methods to remove ear wax, tailored to your needs. Our primary technique is micro-suction, a gentle, effective, and safe procedure where we use a small suction device to remove wax from the ear canal. The clinician views the ear through a microscope to maintain a clear, magnified view of the canal, which ensures greater safety and precision. After the procedure, we’ll provide guidance on how to care for your ears.

How Does Ear Wax Removal Work?
We use a variety of methods to ensure the best results for each patient. These include:

  • Micro-suction: This method uses gentle suction to lift wax from the ear canal. We use a powerful ENT microscope with 20x magnification, allowing us to see your ear canal in fine detail, making the process precise and safe.

  • Irrigation: In some cases, we may use a controlled stream of water to flush out the wax, ensuring no harm is caused to the ear canal.

  • Manual Removal: If necessary, we use specialized small instruments to manually remove wax from the ear canal.

Together, these techniques ensure a thorough, effective, and comfortable wax removal process, tailored to your specific needs.

Should I Use Drops Before Microsuction?
Yes we advise uing Olive oil spray which is available in most local Pharmacies, please spray twice a day 5 days leading up to your scheduled appointment.

What is Ear Wax and What Causes It to Build Up?
Ear wax, also known as cerumen, is produced by glands in the ear canal to help protect the ear by trapping dust, bacteria, and other debris. Normally, wax migrates out of the ear on its own as skin cells in the ear canal grow in an outward direction. However, in some cases, the wax can build up and become impacted. Certain factors, such as wearing hearing aids, using earplugs or earbuds, or having narrow ear canals, can prevent the wax from naturally shedding. Cotton buds should be avoided, as they can push the wax further into the ear, causing blockages.

Can I Use Cotton Ear Buds to Remove Ear Wax?
Cotton buds do not reach deep enough into the ear canal, and using them can actually push the wax further in, causing blockages. Professional help is needed to safely remove the wax.

What Do I Do if I Suspect a Build-Up of Wax?
Signs of wax build-up include muffled hearing, tinnitus (ringing or buzzing in the ears), itchiness, and a feeling of fullness in the ear. Some people try to treat the build-up with drops or other home remedies, but these often fail to clear the wax and can worsen the situation. If you suspect a build-up of wax, it’s best to visit a healthcare professional. With proper lighting and magnification, a professional can use microsuction or other safe methods to remove the wax.
